Keyword density - what is it?

So what's this density stuff?

Well, you've probably read up about keywords and what they are, so you'll have some understanding about how they work.

When the search engine spider (or bot) comes round and spiders your web site, it will make a record (almost like a photographic memory) of your page(s). It will then rate (or rank) the importance and relevance of that page according to:-

  •   the page content;
  •   the keywords you have used;
  •   the position of the keywords within the web page;
  •   the frequency of the keywords throughout the page;
  •   the relevancy of those keywords to your site/ product/ service.
  • If you've built the page correctly, got the tags in the right places, the right keywords in the right places (keyword density) and have not overdone them, your page should be considered pretty good by the search engine bots and spiders. Get it wrong, and they'll be hard on you. (And they can be unforgiving!)
